From Muallim to Malum
The story of the Malum family begins on the roads of Makkah and Madinah. Its ancestors were guides to Hajj pilgrims. In those days, Hajj was a long and difficult journey. Pilgrims from distant lands arrived in an unfamiliar country, among a different language, unknown roads and new customs. Those who took them by the hand and showed them the way became the people they relied on.
The ancestors of the Malum family showed pilgrims the way to the holy sites, explained each ritual of Hajj step by step, and led them safely through the whole journey. In where they stayed, how they travelled and how they prayed, pilgrims depended on them. In Arabic, such a guide is called a Muallim, one who teaches and shows the way.
These guides were trusted with the most sacred journey of a believer’s life. A pilgrim placed his worship, his safety and a lifelong dream in the hands of a Muallim. Trust was at the heart of who they were, and honesty was the foundation of their work.
Over time, in everyday speech, the word “Muallim” became “Malum”. The name by which people once knew their work slowly became the title of a family, and with it, generation after generation, the tradition of showing the way and keeping people’s trust.
Rooted in Shimulia
The Malum family’s ancestral home is Shimulia village in Daudpur Union, Rupganj Upazila, Narayanganj, right beside Sectors 4 and 21 of today’s Purbachal New Town. The family’s roots lie in this green countryside on the banks of the Shitalakshya, where generation after generation grew up.
As a respected Muslim family of Shimulia, the Malums have been part of this land for many generations. Standing by their neighbours in good times and bad, stepping forward when someone is in need, and taking part in the life of the community: this is how their long-standing bond with the people of Shimulia was built. For the family, it is more than being neighbours. It is part of who they are.
The landscape has changed over time. Beside this once-rural area, Purbachal, Dhaka’s new town, is rising. Yet the Malum family’s roots remain in Shimulia, and that pull of the ancestral land is why so much of the family’s work today is centred on Purbachal.
From Title to Identity, Across Generations
Alhaj Lion Shahin Malum, a descendant of this family, turned his ancestral title into his professional identity. The name that once stood for guiding pilgrims became the name he chose for his own work. In 1998, he carried the family name into business by founding Malum Trade International Limited.
That first step began a new journey. Housing, construction materials, trade, food, healthcare and hospitality followed, one company at a time. Today Malum Group is a family of ten companies, and much of its work stands beside the family’s ancestral land, in Purbachal.
Just as his ancestors guided people with honesty, he has built his work on reputation and trust. A pilgrim once placed his journey in the hands of a Muallim with peace of mind; today a family places the dream of its home in Malum’s hands with the same trust. Honouring that trust is Malum’s greatest responsibility.
To the Malum family, this name is more than a title. It is a responsibility. Showing the way, keeping people’s trust and working with integrity: these lessons from their ancestors still guide every generation of the family today. From the roads of Makkah and Madinah to the soil of Shimulia, and from there to today’s Purbachal, times have changed, but the promise remains the same.
মালুম বংশ: পথপ্রদর্শকদের উত্তরসূরি
মুয়াল্লিম থেকে মালুম
মালুম পরিবারের গল্পের শুরু মক্কা ও মদিনার পথে। এই পরিবারের পূর্বপুরুষেরা ছিলেন হজযাত্রীদের পথপ্রদর্শক। সেকালে হজ ছিল দীর্ঘ ও কঠিন এক যাত্রা। দূরদূরান্ত থেকে আসা হাজিরা অচেনা দেশে পৌঁছাতেন ভিন্ন ভাষা, অজানা পথ আর নতুন নিয়মের মাঝে। এমন সময়ে যাঁরা তাঁদের হাত ধরে পথ দেখাতেন, তাঁরাই ছিলেন ভরসার জায়গা।
মালুম পরিবারের পূর্বপুরুষেরা হাজিদের পবিত্র স্থানগুলোর পথ দেখাতেন, হজের প্রতিটি আনুষ্ঠানিকতা ধাপে ধাপে বুঝিয়ে দিতেন এবং পুরো যাত্রায় তাঁদের নিরাপদে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যেতেন। থাকা, চলাফেরা ও ইবাদতের প্রতিটি মুহূর্তে হাজিরা তাঁদের ওপর নির্ভর করতেন। আরবিতে এমন পথপ্রদর্শককে বলা হয় মুয়াল্লিম, অর্থাৎ যিনি শেখান ও পথ দেখান।
একজন মুমিনের জীবনের সবচেয়ে পবিত্র যাত্রার দায়িত্ব ছিল তাঁদের হাতে। একজন হাজি তাঁর ইবাদত, নিরাপত্তা আর সারা জীবনের স্বপ্নপূরণের ভার তুলে দিতেন একজন মুয়াল্লিমের হাতে। তাই আস্থাই ছিল তাঁদের পরিচয়ের মূল, আর সততাই ছিল তাঁদের কাজের ভিত্তি।
সময়ের সঙ্গে মুখে মুখে “মুয়াল্লিম” শব্দটি বদলে হয়ে ওঠে “মালুম”। যে নামে একসময় মানুষ তাঁদের কাজকে চিনত, সেই নামই ধীরে ধীরে হয়ে যায় একটি পরিবারের উপাধি। নামের সঙ্গে প্রজন্মের পর প্রজন্ম বয়ে চলেছে পথ দেখানো আর আস্থা রক্ষার সেই ঐতিহ্য।
শিমুলিয়ায় শিকড়
মালুম পরিবারের পৈতৃক নিবাস নারায়ণগঞ্জের রূপগঞ্জ উপজেলার দাউদপুর ইউনিয়নের শিমুলিয়া গ্রামে। গ্রামটির অবস্থান আজকের পূর্বাচল নতুন শহরের ৪ ও ২১ নম্বর সেক্টরের ঠিক পাশে। শীতলক্ষ্যা নদীর তীরের সবুজ এই জনপদেই পরিবারটির শিকড়, আর এখানেই কেটেছে প্রজন্মের পর প্রজন্মের শৈশব ও বেড়ে ওঠা।
শিমুলিয়ার একটি সম্মানিত মুসলিম পরিবার হিসেবে মালুমরা বহু প্রজন্ম ধরে এই মাটির অংশ। গ্রামের মানুষের সুখে-দুঃখে পাশে থাকা, প্রতিবেশীর প্রয়োজনে এগিয়ে আসা এবং সমাজের কাজে যুক্ত থাকা—এভাবেই এখানকার মানুষ ও সমাজের সঙ্গে গড়ে উঠেছে তাঁদের দীর্ঘদিনের বন্ধন। পরিবারের কাছে এই সম্পর্ক কেবল প্রতিবেশিতার নয়, এটি পরিচয়েরও অংশ।
সময়ের সঙ্গে চারপাশের দৃশ্য বদলেছে। একসময়ের গ্রামীণ এই এলাকার পাশেই গড়ে উঠছে পূর্বাচল, ঢাকার নতুন শহর। তবু মালুম পরিবারের শিকড় রয়ে গেছে শিমুলিয়াতেই। পৈতৃক মাটির টানেই আজও পরিবারটির কাজের বড় অংশ পূর্বাচলকে ঘিরে।
উপাধি থেকে পরিচয়, প্রজন্ম থেকে প্রজন্মে
এই পরিবারেরই উত্তরসূরি আলহাজ লায়ন শাহীন মালুম পৈতৃক উপাধিকে করে তোলেন নিজের পেশাগত পরিচয়। যে নাম একসময় হাজিদের পথ দেখানোর প্রতীক ছিল, সেই নামকেই তিনি বেছে নেন নিজের কাজের পরিচয় হিসেবে। ১৯৯৮ সালে মালুম ট্রেড ইন্টারন্যাশনাল লিমিটেড প্রতিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে তিনি পরিবারের নামকে নিয়ে আসেন ব্যবসায়।
সেই প্রথম পদক্ষেপ থেকেই শুরু হয় নতুন এক পথচলা। আবাসন, নির্মাণসামগ্রী, বাণিজ্য, খাদ্য, স্বাস্থ্যসেবা ও আতিথেয়তা—একে একে গড়ে ওঠে নতুন নতুন প্রতিষ্ঠান। আজ মালুম গ্রুপ দশটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের এক পরিবার, যার অনেক কাজই পরিবারের পৈতৃক ভূমির পাশে, পূর্বাচলে।
পূর্বপুরুষেরা যেমন সততার সঙ্গে মানুষকে পথ দেখাতেন, তেমনি তিনিও তাঁর কাজ গড়ে তুলেছেন সুনাম ও আস্থার ওপর। একজন হাজি যেমন নিশ্চিন্তে মুয়াল্লিমের হাতে নিজের যাত্রা তুলে দিতেন, আজ একটি পরিবার তেমনি আস্থা নিয়ে তুলে দেয় তাদের স্বপ্নের ঘরের দায়িত্ব। সেই আস্থার মর্যাদা রাখাই মালুমের কাছে সবচেয়ে বড় দায়।
মালুম পরিবারের কাছে তাই এই নাম শুধু একটি উপাধি নয়, এটি একটি দায়িত্ব। পথ দেখানো, মানুষের আস্থা রক্ষা করা এবং সততার সঙ্গে কাজ করা: পূর্বপুরুষদের এই শিক্ষা আজও পরিবারের প্রতিটি প্রজন্মকে পথ দেখায়। মক্কা-মদিনার পথ থেকে শিমুলিয়ার মাটি, আর সেখান থেকে আজকের পূর্বাচল—সময় বদলেছে, কিন্তু প্রতিশ্রুতি একই রয়ে গেছে।

A Constant Dreamer, A Visionary Entrepreneur and Philanthropist
Born on 1 September in Rupganj, Narayanganj, Al-Haj Ln. Shahin Malum grew up in a traditional and aristocratic Muslim family amidst the lush greenery and serene beauty of the Shitalakkhya River. His roots, upbringing, and close connection with his community have played an important role in shaping his values, ambitions, and outlook on life.
The name Shahin, of Persian origin, means “royal falcon”—a majestic bird symbolising vision, strength, and the courage to soar beyond horizons. These qualities aptly reflect his spirit as a dreamer, entrepreneur, and community-minded leader who continues to pursue his aspirations with determination and purpose.
An Entrepreneur with Vision
Shahin Malum’s professional journey is a testament to perseverance, enterprise, and the determination to turn dreams into reality. Beginning with his involvement in family business, he gradually expanded his entrepreneurial pursuits, building a portfolio of business ventures under the umbrella of Malum Group. As its Chairman, he provides leadership and direction to a growing range of enterprises, reflecting his commitment to business development, long-term vision, and sustainable growth.
For Shahin, however, entrepreneurship is more than the pursuit of commercial success. He believes that the true measure of achievement lies in the ability to create opportunities, contribute to society, and make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
A Heart Committed to Humanity
Philanthropy and social responsibility occupy a special place in Shahin Malum’s life. Guided by the belief that success carries an obligation to give back, he remains committed to the welfare of his community, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education, and humanitarian service.
When the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world in 2020, Shahin took the initiative to support neighbours and vulnerable members of his community in Bangladesh, helping reach those affected with essential food and drinking water. Even after contracting COVID-19 on three occasions, his commitment to serving others remained a testament to his courage, compassion, and deep sense of humanitarian responsibility.
His association with Lions Clubs International, through his role as Director of the Lions Club of Dhaka Buriganga City, has provided a meaningful platform to advance charitable initiatives and serve those in need. His involvement in social causes benefiting Vulta General Hospital and Kalni High School in Rupganj reflects his concern for community well-being and the importance he places on accessible healthcare and education.
For Shahin, philanthropy is not simply an act of generosity; it is an expression of compassion, responsibility, and a genuine desire to improve the lives of others. His commitment to social service demonstrates his belief that a prosperous society is built not only through enterprise, but also through empathy and collective responsibility.
Family, Roots and Aspirations
Blessed with two sons and a daughter, Shahin Malum shares a happy family life with his wife, Bristy. Dividing his time between his residence in New Eskaton, Dhaka, and his ancestral home in Rupganj, he remains deeply connected to the community where his journey began.
Despite his professional commitments and expanding business interests, he continues to cherish his roots and the values that have guided him throughout his life.
